Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman hinted on Tuesday that discussions about normalizing relations with Israel would continue following the conclusion of the Israel-Gaza conflict, as per a statement from the White House.
In the statement, President Joe Biden and bin Salman “affirmed the importance of working towards a sustainable peace between Israelis and Palestinians as soon as the crisis subsides, building on the work that was already underway between Saudi Arabia and the United States over recent months,” reported the Daily Caller.
According to Reuters, Biden had previously suggested that one of Hamas’ objectives in its offensive against Israel was to obstruct the progress of normalization talks between Saudi Arabia and Israel.
The White House statement also mentioned that both Biden and the prince pledged to prevent an escalation of the conflict and maintain stability in the region. They also urged Hamas to release hostages immediately and expressed their support for the humanitarian aid dispatched to Gaza.
Diplomatic talks between Israel and Saudi Arabia were in progress before Hamas invaded southern Israel on October 7, per The Times of Israel’s report.
The proposed framework for Saudi-Israel normalization reportedly encompassed Israeli concessions towards the Palestinians, security assurances from the United States, and an agreement regarding a Saudi nuclear program, as highlighted by the United States Institute of Peace.
